Places for People has named the contractors appointed to a £246m groundworks framework, organised into 13 regional lots across England and Scotland.
Coinford Central and RJ McLeod secured the widest spread of places, each landing spots on six of the 13 lots. M&J Evans Construction and Houlihan & Co each picked up four lots, and the wider roster of winners also includes MV Kelly, Erith, Tamdown, O'Halloran & O'Brien and Chasetown Civil Engineering.
How the lots are divided
The framework splits the work geographically, with each lot served by a group of appointed firms rather than a single contractor. Coverage runs across the North West, Yorkshire, the Midlands, the South East, the South West and London, plus three Scottish lots.
- North West — Lancashire, Manchester and Merseyside
- Yorkshire — South and West Yorkshire
- Central West — West Midlands, Staffordshire and Warwickshire
- Central East — Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire and Northamptonshire
- South East — south Surrey, Kent, East and West Sussex
- South East — Cambridgeshire, Norfolk, Suffolk, Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire and Essex
- South West — north Gloucestershire, Oxfordshire and Wiltshire
- South West — south Berkshire, Hampshire and Dorset
- South West — west Bristol, Devon and Somerset
- London — Greater London
- Scotland — Central Belt
- Scotland — North 1, Aberdeen area only
- Scotland — North 2, detailed area not specified
Scotland's three lots are split between the Central Belt and two northern packages, one limited to the Aberdeen area and one whose detailed area has not been specified.
Scope of works
Work ranges from site clearance, bulk earthworks and foundations through to drainage, utilities, roads, sewers and external works. The Scottish packages reach further into the build, covering house foundations and completed in-situ concrete floors as well as plot drainage, retaining wall foundations and ducting for electric vehicle charging infrastructure.
Package values
Greater London is the largest regional package at around £38m, followed by Berkshire, Hampshire and Dorset at £30m. East Anglia and the northern Home Counties account for a further £29m. Taken together, the three largest packages carry roughly £97m of the £246m total, weighting the framework towards London and southern England.
By appointing several firms to each region, the framework gives Places for People a standing pool of groundworks contractors to draw on lot by lot rather than a single national supplier. Coinford Central and RJ McLeod feature across the widest range of areas, while most other winners hold places in a narrower set of regions.
